In the meantime, I can reassure anyone who knows Ian that if he's dead, he's doing a remarkable job of not showing it. I think a dryly witty letter to the editor would be called for -- I'll pass on any good suggestions to Ian.
What led to the obituary? A prank or someone else with the same name dying? Slightly jarring that he was born in the same year as I was, yet they found the report plausible enough to print.

I haven't heard an explanation yet. Ian did update his entry in their membership database a bit before (he got promoted), so perhaps that got screwed up somehow.
In any case, he seemed more amused than disturbed.
